AI decorating for the room you already live in

Updated October 1, 2026

AI decorating means you photograph a room, choose a style or a single job, and an app shows that same room decorated, with its walls, windows and camera angle kept. Renova does it from one photo on iPhone, Android and the web, and the free plan gives you 3 designs a day.

How it works

  1. An empty apartment bedroom with off-white walls, grey carpet, a radiator under a bare window and one cardboard box

Photograph the room as it is

Shoot in daylight with the lights on, from a corner at about chest height, so most of the room fits in the frame. You don't need to tidy up first, and an empty room works just as well: the AI reads the walls, windows and floor, not the clutter.

  2. The Renova app on a phone showing the style picker with Modern, Japandi and Scandinavian living rooms

Choose what you want help with

For a full look, pick the room and one of 30 styles, then how far to go. Refresh keeps your furniture and changes the decor, Renovate follows your current layout closely, and Redesign takes more freedom. If you only want help with one thing, pick a single job instead: furnish an empty room, new walls, a new floor, a new layout or decorations for a holiday.

  3. The Renova app comparing a room before and after with a slider across the photo

    Compare, redo and keep decorating

Drag the slider to see before and after on the same photo. Not quite right? Tap Redo for another take on the same choices. When you like it, carry on from the result with a wall color, a floor or a palette, and save or share the one you want to show your partner or roommate.

Examples

An empty bedroom with grey carpet, off-white walls and a window without curtainsBeforeThe same bedroom furnished in Japandi style with a low oak bed, linen bedding, a paper lamp and a rugAfter
Furnish empty room in Japandi: a bare move-in bedroom gets a low bed, storage, a rug and soft lighting.
A cluttered spare room with a folding table, an old office chair, a drying rack and storage boxesBeforeThe same spare room as a mid-century home office with a walnut desk, a leather chair and a bookshelfAfter
Renovate in Mid-century: the junk room becomes a home office that keeps the room's own layout.
A bare rental studio with white walls, a grey futon, a double bed with a white duvet and vertical blindsBeforeThe same studio refreshed in a bohemian style with layered rugs, patterned textiles, plants and wall hangingsAfter
A rental studio refreshed in Bohemian: rugs, textiles and plants a renter can add without losing the security deposit.
A dining room with flat white walls, a pine table, mismatched chairs and a glass pendant lightBeforeThe same dining room with sage green walls and the same table, chairs and pendantAfter
New walls in Sage green: only the paint changes, so you can judge the color against your own furniture.
A small living room with a sofa against the wall, an armchair facing the window and a bookshelf blocking lightBeforeThe same living room with the sofa and armchair facing each other around the coffee table and the window clearAfter
Rearrange furniture for Cozy conversation: the same pieces, turned to face each other.

Options

A dining room with sage green walls, a pine table and a glass pendant light

New walls

Changes only the walls: paint colors like Sage green, Greige or Navy blue, plus limewash, panel molding, wood slats and tiles. Pick it when you're standing in the paint aisle and can't decide, and see the color in your room before you buy a single quart.

A bedroom with a light oak floor in place of old carpet, with the same bed and pine wardrobe

New floor

Changes only the floor, from Light oak and herringbone to tile, marble and carpet. Pick it when a worn wall-to-wall carpet is the thing dragging a bedroom down and you want to see what hardwood or vinyl plank would do.

A small living room rearranged so the sofa and armchair face each other

Rearrange furniture

Moves what you already own toward a goal, such as Cozy conversation (seats that face each other), More light (nothing blocking the windows) or Work corner. Pick it when the room feels awkward but the furniture itself is fine.

A family living room decorated for Christmas with a tree by the bay window, garlands on the mantel and stockings

Christmas

Decorates the room for an occasion from the photo alone, with nothing to choose: a tree, garlands, lights and stockings. It's one of 15 themes, from Halloween and Autumn harvest to birthdays and New Year's Eve. Pick it to plan the mantel and the tree spot before the boxes come down from the attic, or browse more Christmas decoration ideas first.

Limits

The free plan makes 3 designs a day with every tool, style and theme, and its saved and shared images carry a small watermark. Pro raises that to 50 designs a day, removes the watermark and adds a design assistant you can chat with (100 messages a day). The app works in 32 languages.

What it does not do

Renova edits your photo; it does not measure your room, so sizes in the result are an impression, not a plan to buy to. It does not link to furniture you can buy, build a 3D model you can walk around or draw a floor plan to scale, and there are no human designers behind it. Some other decorating apps do those things well, and our side-by-side look at AI design tools says where. Every result is an AI-made picture to help you decide, not a photo of a finished room.

Is there a free AI decorating app?

Yes. Renova's free plan gives you 3 designs a day with every tool and style, on iPhone, Android and the web, without paying first.

How do I use AI for decorating?

Take one clear photo of the room in daylight, choose a style or a single job such as new walls or a new floor, and compare the result with your photo. Use what you like as a shopping and painting guide, then try another version with Redo.

Can AI decorate my room without replacing my furniture?

Yes, choose Refresh: it keeps your furniture and layout and changes only the decor, like textiles, lamps, plants and art. If the layout is the problem, Rearrange furniture moves your own pieces instead.

Can an AI room decorating app furnish an empty room?

Yes. Furnish empty room fills a bare room with a bed or sofa, storage, a rug and lighting in the style you pick, which helps before a move or when staging a home to sell.

What is the best AI for interior decorating?

It depends on the job. For decorating the room you have from one photo, Renova is built for that; if you want shoppable products, a 3D model you can walk around or plans to scale, other tools fit better. For a wider redesign, see AI interior design from one photo.

Is the result accurate enough to buy furniture from?

Use it for the look, not the measurements. Check sizes with a tape measure before you order anything, since the AI does not know how big your room really is.
